History of McMan

On November 15, 1975, four graduates of Grant MacEwan College opened a group home in the inner city of Edmonton, Alberta. They were Nora McNamara, John Meston, Jim Allers, and Rick Newcombe. By using the beginning letters of their surnames, the title McMan was derived.

Our founders accepted that many young people needed to be cared for outside of their own families, but they questioned and challenged the existing norms and practices of how to provide that care. They believed that things could and should be different; so, they made them different.

McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association is a non-profit society and registered charity, incorporated in 1976.
